I got the chance to spend the weekend with my daughter and her best friend at the Cabin at West Glacier recently. It was a great chance to explore Glacier Park in winter and play outside in the new snow.
Everyone knows how amazing Glacier Park is in the summer with all the warm weather activities such as hiking, biking, swimming and camping but experiencing Glacier in the winter is becoming one of my favorite seasons!
It’s quiet. It’s peaceful. It’s serene. It’s beautiful. It’s amazing!
Glacier Park Winter Activities
Not many people realize all the outdoor activities still available in Glacier Park during winter. Snowshoeing and skiing are the favorite recreational activity in Glacier National Park and Ranger-led snowshoe walks are offered on Saturday and Sunday throughout the winter.
There’s even winter camping available for the hearty adventurer. Auto camping is available at the Apgar Picnic Area and St. Mary Campground. There is no charge for camping in the winter and a free backcountry permit is required to camp in the backcountry.
For our weekend girls getaway, we used the Cabin at West Glacier as basecamp and explored the trails in Glacier Park with our snowshoes and even had a picnic lunch at the snowy beach at Lake McDonald.
It’s also my favorite time of year to photograph the park.
For evening, we would set out for nightly walks to look at the night sky and watch for shooting stars. Then we would race back to the cabin to sit by the fire and make s’mores.
Snowshoe Glacier National Park
During winter (January – March), the Glacier National Park Service offers free ranger-led tours on Saturdays and Sundays. Suitable for varying ages and abilities, the walks encourage participants to search for signs of wildlife and discover plans and animals that call the park home. In addition, the Going-to-the-Sun Road, the shore of Lake McDonald and the trail system at Marias Pass are prime areas for snowshoeing.
- Check weather and trail conditions before you go.
- Local outfitters, including Glacier Adventure Guides and Izaak Walton Inn offer guided snowshoeing and cross-country excursions into Glacier.
The Cabin at West Glacier looks beautiful all layered in winter white!
